Introduction
The Selfish theme has been on my mind, thinking of one of my earlier readings, Selfish Gene, where all genes by definition and for survival have to take a self-preserving stance. An article in the Collaborative Fund called Selfish Writing, based on a Barry Ritholtz interview with the revered Howard Marks, rung closer to home, and brought a confluence of thoughts and ideas. In the context of this missive, we use Dawkins’ view of selfishness, not as a mean human characteristic that may harm others, but as a simple business stance necessary for survival and thriving.
In the past, we have discussed[1] the issues related to the technological shortcomings of the investment office and the journey that lead to their current state. Each investment office is composed of a patchwork of technologies that were inherited through many former administrations, made through incremental decisions, based on availability and upgrades at the time, influenced by persistent large service providers, applied for temporary fixes or permanent patches, affected by vacillating budgets, and made through biased judgments.
